Torture at Lake Alice admitted to UN for first time

In 2015, the United Nations’ Committee Against Torture criticised New Zealand for not properly investigating historical claims of torture.
The committee’s sixth periodic report, to check compliance with the UN convention against torture, said the state had “failed to investigate or hold any individual accountable for the nearly 200 allegations of torture and ill-treatment against minors at Lake Alice Hospital”.
